Movie Review: The Book of Eli

Rating Whoa!

Let me get this out:

"What a great movie!"

Expectations: Going into to this movie I was very curious about it. I had never seen Denzel in an action movie so I wondered if he could pull it off. So let me put your fears to rest. Yes he pulled it off. Now don't get me wrong. He is not pulling a "Conan the Barbarian" in this movie.

The fight seems are not drawn out , but they have a good amount of "stick and move" and a healthy slice of suspense added in. And for this movie all this really works well. So it will leave you satisfied.

Plot: In the movie Denzel is living in a post-apocalyptic world, think "Mad Max", where everyone leaves in ruins and scavenges for food and resources. Denzel is a wanderer on a quest to the West coast of America to fulfill his purpose in life. His purpose in life is to deliver a special book there. I know, I know, there are big questions marks now.

The movie gets interesting because it brings up the topic of the power of knowledge. In the post-apocalyptic world, all the books are destroyed. So most of the population is not educated and can not read. The antagonist is a leader of a town, who is well read and knowledgeable. He uses this to control the people around him. And the sparks start flying in the movie when he meets Denzel's character who does not want to be controlled. Think Rambo in "First Blood".

Conclusion: All in all I suggest you see this movie. It has the right amount of action combined with the right amount of substance. There is a very short list of movies that can combine the two like this and The Book of Eli did it.

Lame Rating

First let me get this out: This movie is worth seeing. But just not in the movie theater. This is more like a "boring Saturday, I have nothing else to do, lets see what's on TV" movie.

The concept of this movie is sound. The world is ending because God says "time is up!" He plans to kill everyone on earth. And the only way to save the world is to save this unborn baby. One of the head Angels of God's Army decides that he doesn't want the mankind to end so he takes it upon himself to stop God and all his Army from annihilating the world.

Up to this point the movie sounds interesting. But once I sat my butt in that theater seat right in front of someone that had not bathed in 2 days I knew I was in trouble. I should have gotten up right then. But I held my breath and pressed on.

(Spoiler alert)

The reason this movie did so bad was based on one thing, the story.

The story goes that God wants to kill everyone on earth using his massive army of Angels. In order to do this, Angels start possessing the "weak" minded/willed people on the planet. And by controlling these possessed people he can eradicate the world. (Think of killer zombies controlled by Angels and/or God). One of the first hurdles in the movie was this part in the story. I thought to myself,

"If God wanted to kill everyone on earth why would he do it one hand-to-hand fight at a time?"

I mean God can blink his eye and blow up the whole earth with his thoughts. Or since he already created these super powerful Angels, which they show in the movie, why limit their abilities by taking possession of humans? Another in the movie that did not make sense was when an angel takes possession of a human the human became this Evil looking, sharp toothed, cussing monster. It didn't make sense these heavenly angels created by God could become these demon things while carrying out his orders.

As the story goes on the "good guys" have to protect the baby and the mother from the attacking force for zombie/Angel possessed people. Basically all the zombie people do is try to run into the building the good guys are trying to defend. Oddly enough , none of the Angels thought to bring along any guns, bombs or some really cool Heavenly Rail Gun!

No they go for the dumb approach and just hope they can run into the building with no weapons or armor or common sense!

Now I know when the writers sat down to write this movie they probably made this a conscious decision. Because let's be real, if God wants you dead you are going to be dead. So suspending belief I watched on (and kept holding my breath, that guy behind me was extra stinky).

The next part in the plot is around this baby. It is suppose to be a prophet that will lead the people out of darkness. So at the same time God gives the order to "kill everyone on the planet" he picks a baby to be the spiritual leader for the whole world, to be born while the world is being destroyed. So it seems God was hedging his bets:

God: "If this baby is born before my angels kill him then I will give the world another chance."

Now odds are if you are going to see this movie you are going for the action. So the plot isn't suppose to be that important. It had some decent action scenes but if they could have done a lot more. You don't have to have a big imagination to think about how cool a movie would be having angels having a huge war on earth. But instead the movie reduced something cool to a zombie/survival flick all taking place inside a dinner. They did not even really make the movie suspenseful or scary.

In the end this movie was a lost opportunity. It could have been great. It had a smooth cast. Smooth story premise. But it ended up with a rough, poorly made product.

Don't bother spending the $11 bucks at the theater. But for kicks watch it at home.

IMAX "Think Small"

Don't get me wrong I like the "real" IMAX experience. But lately I have seen IMAX imposters popping up around my house.

They say they are IMAX , but really they are mini-me versions of IMAX. If I knew any better they look the same size as a regular theater. I am not even sure what I am paying extra for!! I have to pay the normal IMAX price but get the adnormally small screen.

What makes it worst, most theaters don't advertise they have the small IMAX screen. The only way you will know is the moment you go in the theater and

have that sinking feeling like you have been cheated!

Concert Review: Live Post from the Maxwell, Common and Chrisette Michele concert

First let me say I have never heard so many women scream all at once for one man. :-)

The concert is very good. Chrisette did her thing on stage for one of her first times out here. Common went all out during he segment! He did the old and new songs and even found time to break dance on stage! I wish I would have seen him in concert earlier. :-)

Maxwell is up now. He has all the ladies in a trance. My own lady has a little of drool our her chin. Just kidding. :-) But Maxwell said it best during the concert, "brothers, if you can find a lady tonight I can't do nothing for you."

Seriously, if your single, you could run some real game in an atmosphere like this :-)

TP has gone "Pretty Boy" with the dread locks coming off!

After five years of "lockin it", it was time for change. And I am not talking about Obama.

The Manhood of the Traveling Swine Flu Pants...

I am not sure if its the Swine Flu or not. But I've been under the weather lately.

At first , it was a case of the runs. Having the "bubble guts", as my brother likes to call them, is sometimes hard to track down. You can always go down a list of stuff you ate. But if nothing turns up there. What else could it be?

I had it so bad one day, I had to sit in the back row in church just so I could make a quick exit to the potty. Luckily, Divine Intervention kept me in my seat ;-)

I was able to get to the bottom of this mystery after my wife commented on all the dried apricots I was eating. Apparently these delicious fruits are as potent as a pack of prunes in an old lady's purse! Who knew!?

Cutting myself off from the good stuff, my troubles didn't end. Shortly after that my armpits started hurting!! Man, I felt like a patient on a "House" tv show. After feeling this irritation for a week I decided it was my deodorant and changed to a different one. No luck. After trying a third type of "smellgood on a stick" , with no luck, I decided I needed professional help. I called into my doctor's office to ask for an appointment. I totally felt like a dork when I had to explain my armpits were sore. Most people head to the Doctors for something serious and here I am with sore armpits. On top of that, that very morning I had a headache and a fever. I could see my scene on "House" now.

"Well Trevor, we know what is causing your problems. The apricots you were eating combined with a certain ingredient in your deodorant is causing your issues."

But, of course it was nothing like that. My doctor told me I had to put warm wet cloths under my arms and that should fix me up in no time. Really weird remedy . But hey, I am down with the natural stuff!!! The second part to my fix is that I had to stop wearing deodorant for a few days.

"Say What!"

It's been a Billion degrees out here lately and I have to walk around with no protection? And I can't forget my own motto... "Never let them see you sweat."

So over the past few days I have been trying not to make any sudden movements at work. Then I have to do a smell check every few hours :-( . But don't worry. I freshen up a few times a day in the rest room. ;-) So far no one has caught me wiping my armpits clean in the bathroom with a top secret towel and soap I bring. Just call me 007 of cleanliness.

I may have been hard to notice on screen... but I made it on live TV!!

This past Tuesday we made it to an American Idol taping for the last 7 singers.

It was cool to be there to experience what I have been seeing on tv all these years. It is definetly a live show.

Something that was interesting is to see how SMALL the studio was. With their camera shots I always assumed they filmed in a huge theater somewhere. But nope, it is in a tiny studio. I tip my hat to them though for some movie magic.

We also made some signs for that night. But they were crappy, so the camera man didn't show it during the show. Mental note: Make better signs that don't look like a 1st grader made them.

@ Universal Studios - Hollywood

We hit up Universal Studios City Walk and Park for some fun in the sun. It was pretty cool to hang out there. But the one in Florida is way better. In Florida it is a lot larger and has more rides. But the Hollywood location was cool and we even got to go on a water ride.

We got to see some behind the scenes stuff and how they make the movie magic.

The last part of the day we went on a tour of the Studio lots. Everything was all fine until our trolley broke down going up a hill on the lot of Desperate House Wives. They were filming at the time so they could not fix the trolley. So we had to wait for 30mins. Then they made us get off and walk down the hill to another trolley. We never did finish the tour. But it was cool seeing them trying to push the trolley up the hill with two trucks!!

What up Fans! WBC is heading to Southern California this Easter Weekend for fun in the Sun.
First let me say "Thank You Jesus" since this is your Day.
Second let me say "Let's party!!"

We are headed to a Padre's game today against the Giants. Tomorrow we will go to Universal Studios. The initial plan WAS Lego Land, but we changed those plans :-( . I so wanted to make a self replica of my me in legos. That would be sweet.
On Tuesday we will head to American Idol!!!!!
Look for us in the crowd. I will be the guy with the sign that says, "Make me a judge!!" or "My grandmother can sing better than that!" or "Pull my finger."

WBC back in Las Vegas!

We hit up Vegas this past weekend. We went for the Nascar race there. Also it was my Baby's birthday weekend.

It was good to be back. This was my first time being in Vegas on a non-holiday weekend. Rum Jungle wasn't poppin'. BUT Pure at Caesar 's was ON and poppin! The music needed some work. But the club has a good layout and feel.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway was hit up next. I still have exhaust smoke still on me. But it's all good. [Pics]

Obama Inauguration - Day 6 - Inauguration Day !!!

MJ is PUMPED with her new Obama hat! She put a fur hat on top of it for extra warmth. Crazy looking to me :-p

We woke up that morning at 4am. We made it to the Metro subway around 6 something in the morning. It was packed!

We made it to the National Mall a little after 7. It was packed also.

We felt like a bunch of steaks packed in freezer!

All in all it was a Good Day and a wonderful trip. I have "hope" that Obama will do his thing. But I am in "wait and see" mode until I see some results. I am not on the bandwagon just yet. But I am glad he is our President.

Obama Inauguration - Day 5 - Martin Luther King Day of Service

On Day 5, we volunteered in the Feeding America event at MLK Jr Library. They gave away food and clothing to who ever that wanted it. Dexter and I helped in line control. MJ, Brittany and her friends helped in assisting people picking out clothes in their size.

Ben Affleck, Josh Groban , Herbie Hancock and MLK III were just a few of the people that came out to represent for the day. They asked me to speak on stage too. But I didn't want to take away the focus of the event toward me. I'm not selfish like that ;-)

Afterward, we headed up to the Acadiana Restaurant. VERY good Louisiana style food. Sort of like an upscale Nola's (also very good).

After that we did some more walking around the capitol and called it a day.

We have to get ready for the BIG day. Tomorrow is party time!!

Obama Inauguration - Day 4 - "We Are One" Concert

What a great event. Super COLD!! But great.

It was really cool seeing so many people singing along to oldies. And to see everyone so excited about one person, Obbbbbaaammmaa, was crazy.

A ton of celebrities were there too. Jamie Foxx did a pretty good Obama impersonation :-)

What added to this special day... I got on TV!! My local tv station in Indianapolis spotted my wife's Purdue University sweater and called us over. And what made it extra , extra special is our daughter and her friends got interviewed from our local tv station in the California Bay Area. It was a big tv day for my fam. Hey, we should start charging for all these interviews!!

They say around 500 thousand people were there today. Just think how many people will be there for the Inauguration on Tuesday!!! Miiiiiillliiiioooons.

Tomorrow we are participating in the National Day of Service for MLK day. I'll keep y'all posted.

Obama Inauguration - Day 3 - Smithsonian/African Art

Day 3 of the trip was pretty good. I got to play astronaut at the Space and Science Smithsonian and checked out our African heritage through art at the African Art Smithsonian Museum. Does any of this stuff look scary??

We also picked up our tickets for the Inauguration today. Thanks Mr. Stark!!!

Obama came in to Washington today on the "Obama Express". It was sort of a non-event though. He pretty much hopped out the train, took some pics and dipped out in his bullet plated limo.

Tomorrow we are headed to the Inauguration concert, "We Are One". Should be pretty fun. They have a million artist on the line up.

Obama Inauguration - Day 2 - US Capitol Building

We headed to the US Capitol Building today. This is where Obama will be sworn in. Also they do Senate and Representative stuff here like meetings and voting.

Let me say one thing about the weather here.

Growing up in "Nap Town" aka Indianapolis I am built for this weather. But I think living in California is making me soft :-(

Along with the US Capitol Building we checked out the Library of Congress, Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the White House. And of course my wife wanted to stop, in 9 degree weather, and take pictures of every monument. To make it worse, she has just gotten a new camera with a super zoom lens. So she wanted to take close and far away pics of EVERYTHING. In the mean time me and my son are freezing to death. (If you are reading this baby, I looooove you :-) Something I noticed today, it was so cold, the static electricity was really strong. My music head phones shocked me in both ears three times.

Well since I am typing this I made it back to the hotel safe and with all my fingers and toes. And hearing some memorable quotes today from Samuel L Jackson, from the Movie "Snakes on a plane", I knew my hearing was good.

Stump Speech from TP:

"I want to thank all my supporters for making my run for office a enjoyable one! Who would have guessed that America was ready for a black man in the oval office.

We had a wonderful time this past week. The "Champagne Campaign" event at the Etiquette Lounge had great voter turn out. More than what I expected!

My adviser told me that the people need to see the personal side of TP so the Ho use Warming event was perfect. Too bad the Jacuzzi wasn't working. Then again maybe it was best, no one saw me in another speedo. I may lose some votes.

The last event was a blast getting down and "dutty" at the Af r oFunk festival.

Thanks again everyone for a great time. Think of me come November! And remember... "Keep Hope Alive!"
